Do you ever dream of escaping to an exotic tropical island? I admit I have…
It started way back when I was a boy. My father told me stories about the time he spent on the Indonesian island of Bali. He was stationed there as a young soldier during WWII.
The sacred lotus is much more than a beautiful blossom. This powerful plant breaks down fat and drains it from your fat cells.
He described the captivating volcanic mountains, cascading waterfalls and white stretches of sand leading to a clear blue sea… It’s no wonder Bali is called the Island of the Gods. For me, traveling to this beautiful island was a dream come true.
As my plane circled in low over the lush landscape, I saw shades of green and blue I’ve never seen before. But one of the most breathtaking things I saw was the sacred lotus flower. Its bright, pink blossoms floated above the surface of the freshwater ponds that dot the landscape.
But there’s more to this flower than its stunning beauty.
The sacred lotus is also a potent fat fighter. And it’s one of the slimming secrets that keep Balinese women so slender. In fact, on my first visit to Bali, I couldn’t help notice how thin everyone was — both men and women. I figured everyone of this island ate like a bird!
But I was wrong. The Balinese love to eat rich, decadent foods. And an important ingredient in their dishes is the lotus. They eat every part of the plant — from the petals and the leaves to the roots and stems.
It’s only recently that modern science has studied the weight-loss potential behind the plant. The sacred lotus may hold the key to helping you achieve accelerated fat reduction.
Researchers were able to see this at work in a recent animal study. They found that sacred lotus appears to have slowed down the animals’ natural process of making new fat cells… and signaled for the breakdown of existing fat at the same time.
Sacred lotus seems to specifically target fatty tissue. It helped keep the animals from gaining more weight — and many even dropped weight.
Another animal study suggested that sacred lotus interfered with the body’s digestion and absorption of fat and carbs. At the same time, it accelerated the breakdown of fat and helped the body melt it faster.
The study found that the extract was especially useful in preventing parametrial adipose tissue weight — or weight gain around the uterus area. This makes the lotus particularly important when it comes to women and weight loss.
But the sacred lotus benefits your health in more ways than just fighting obesity. In fact, research shows it can:
- Lower blood sugar
- Boost immunity
- Stabilize blood pressure
- Reduce inflammation
In Bali, they cook with and eat every part of the lotus plant. The roasted seeds are used as a coffee substitute. The root is stir-fried or pickled in vinegar. And the leaves are often added to salads.
Stuffed Sacred Lotus Leaves
One of my favorite ways to eat lotus leaves is to wrap them around different kinds of vegetables and meat and then bake it. Kind of like an Indonesian version of stuffed cabbage. Here’s a recipe my Balinese friends taught me:
- First, soak dried lotus leaves in hot water for an hour.
- While your leaves are soaking, heat up a wok on the highest temperature setting. Add a tablespoon of oil and stir-fry whatever vegetables you like for no more than a couple of minutes. Set those to the side.
- Add a bit more oil and stir-fry the rice.
- Pat the lotus leaves dry then lay it in a large bowl. Spread the stir-fried vegetables in the center of the leaf, and add the rice around it.
- Now, fold the lotus leaves around the rice and vegetables. Press down until it’s flattened.
- Steam the entire thing for around four minutes. Then take the bowl out of the steamer or off the steam, and turn upside down on a plate. Enjoy!
Lotus leaf is available in supplement form. You can also use the dried leaves to make tea: Just steep in hot boiling water for at least 3-4 hours. Be aware that lotus leaf has a slightly bitter taste.
Lotus leaf may increase bleeding, so be sure to check with your health care provider before taking lotus leaf if you have a bleeding disorder.

If you can’t come to the clinic for a professional all-natural facial, you can still get the effects of rose oil cleanser in your own home. Here’s a simple recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1 Tbsp. organic, cold-pressed 100% rosehip seed oil
- 1 Tbsp. jojoba oil
Directions:
- Pour the oils into small glass bottle
- Gently shake.
- Massage two drops of the oil blend into your skin for a few minutes.
- Rinse with water and gently pat dry.
I recommend refrigerating your rosehip oil to extend its shelf life.

Youthful Skin Tea Blends
The loveliest thing about herbs is how versatile they are. Most herbs have a myriad of actions associated with them, so it isn’t hard to come up with a tasty blend that does a lot of good in your body. We’re always looking for ways to keep our skin glowing and youthful and a good tea blend can offer us some really beautiful results!
When you’re creating an herbal tea blend (or any kind of herbal formula) you always want to look at what your goal is and what issues might be standing in the way of that goal. It might be obvious, but when the goal is ‘youthful skin’ you want to work to counter the causes of aging.
Age Fighting
There’s no way to slow down time, so let’s think about aging in a different way. As we age our DNA is changed and damaged by natural wear and tear. We breathe oxygen to live, so we are literally oxidizing our bodies every time we take a breath.
Our cells are fed by glucose, so our body breaks down our nutrients into sugars. Though many of us consume too much sugar — and that’s something we can work on — glycation is a natural part of the living process.
Stress is also a natural part of our lives — without a bit of stress we would have a hard time accomplishing our goals. Over time, stress hormones and especially excess stress are considered to have a negative effect on us — yet again, it’s another part of aging.
The idea behind a youthful skin tea blend is to equip your body with tools to nourish the skin even though these processes are going on. Since we know the actions of herbs through knowledge that has been passed down through the ages and (very recently) through scientifically breaking down plants into their constituents, we’re able to directly combat the effects that aging has on the skin.
We know that free radicals and oxidation can cause changes to DNA, and that antioxidants bind with those free radicals in the bloodstream to stop them from causing damage. So we want to include an ample supply of antioxidants in our daily diets and in our youthful skin tea recipe.
We know our liver and kidneys help to balance blood sugar, break down our nutrients, and process toxins out of our body, so we want to gently support their functioning and offer them minerals to help keep them strong.
We can work with stress on two different levels with our tea — adaptogens for long term support and nervines for short term relaxation.
That’s a great start for anyone, right? Since we’re all aging (no matter what age you are currently), we all need antioxidants, liver and kidney support, minerals,adaptogens, and nervines. So ingredients that have these attributes alone would make a great anti-aging tea.
But let’s go a little bit deeper and create some tasty, youthful skin teas based on skin type.
Youthful Skin Teas Based on Skin Type
When you’re making a tea for daily use, you want to work with gentle tonic herbs that will help bring your skin into balance rather than a tea blend that will push your skin in the opposite direction.
Additionally, I ascribe to the traditional way to drink tea — I suggest steeping tea 2-3 times before throwing out your herbs. This will make sure that you’re getting all of the nutrients out of your herbs (some take longer to be released), you’ll have more water in your body, and your blend will last much longer.
I suggest supporting your local herb store for your tea blend, but if there isn’t one close to you Mountain Rose Herbs or Pacific Botanicals are great online retail stores for your herbs.
Youthful Skin Tea for Oily Skin
If you’re experiencing oily skin, you want to add herbs that will help balance out your extra sebum production. Astringent and cooling herbs are helpful in quelling excess and blood movers stimulate circulation, which is great for creating balance in the whole system.
Equal parts: Steep 2-3 times.
- Lemon balm
- Yarrow
- Burdock root
- Hibicus
- Tulsi
Youthful Skin Tea for Dry Skin
What you’re experiencing on the outside of the body is really indicative to what’s happening internally. If you have dry skin externally, I always add juicy (demulcent) herbs to help heal that internal mucosa and offer support to the skin. I also want to add a blood building herb because dry skin is indicative of a deficiency in the skin, since the skin is fed by the blood, you want to build the blood up so that all the nutrients you’re giving it can make it all the way out to the skin.
Equal parts: Steep 2-3 times
- Marshmallow root
- Alfalfa
- Vervain
- Rosehips
- Ashwagandha
Keep it balanced! Youthful Skin Tea for Combination Skin
Combination skin is the most difficult to work with externally, but internal skin work is all about balance! Like with oily skin, we want to add a blood mover and like dry skin we want a demulcent herb. We also want to focus on nutrients and minerals to help feed the skin so that it can balance itself.

What is a carbon credit?
A carbon credit is the financial term used for the reduction of one metric tonne of CO2 emissions.
- A unit earned by someone who has implemented a project according to international standards that generates a reduction, removal, storage or avoidance in greenhouse gas emissions than would otherwise have occurred (for example a wind -farm);
- Issued by an authority or a Board pursuant to those international standards (one credit is issued for every tonne of emissions of carbon dioxide (or carbon dioxide equivalent) that has been reduced, removed, stored or avoided); and
- Bought by someone either for offsetting purposes, in which case the credit is retired (i.e. taken out of circulation permanently) to offset their own emissions (where one tonne of carbon dioxide can be offset by one unit / credit) or for investment or Speculative purposes.
- One carbon credit is equal to one ton of carbon dioxide
The major greenhouse gases emitted by these industries are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and hydrofluorocarbons all of which increase the atmosphere’s ability to trap infrared energy and thus affect the climate.The concept of carbon credits came into existence as a result of an increasing awareness of the need for controlling emissions. Scientists believe that reducing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions is essential if we are to minimise our impact on the environment.
The CDM allows emission-reduction projects in developing countries to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each equivalent to one tonne of CO2. TheseCERs can be traded and sold, and used by industrialized countries to a meet a part of their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol.The mechanism stimulates sustainable development and emission reductions, while giving industrialized countries some flexibility in how they meet their emission reduction limitation targets.
The CDM is the main source of income for the UNFCCC Adaptation Fund, which was established to finance adaptation projects and programmes in developing country Parties to the Kyoto Protocol that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. The Adaptation Fund is financed by a 2% levy on CERs issued by the CDM.
